From the small town of Ras Al Ain, Syria, Omar Souleyman began his singing career in 1995 at the age of 30 as a wedding musician. Now, five western-released albums, multiple world tours and a 2011 collaboration with Icelandic artist Björk, have rapidly elevated Souleyman to the status of a cult international legend. Omar talks to Daily Dot Editor Austin Powell about the issues surrounding the devastating conflict in his home country, the evolution of the Syrian music landscape, and what the future may hold for himself and artists like him.
