This always-on lifestyle provides an additional set of signals about user context and intent that are game-changing for marketers. Beyond "Hyperlocal" or "SoLoMo", it is really about capturing the right context and understanding what people want and need to do at different touchpoints. Google's Tim Reis, will explore how mobile can be rethought within wholly new and rich contexts, and how marketers can leverage these to make meaningful connections with their customers.

OMMA: The Next Big Thing IS Not a Gadget
Take your eyes off the bright shiny CE objects for a second and you will see that mobility is about changing consumer behaviors, not the technology. At every stage, from mobile shopping to at-home use to tweeting snarky comments about TV shows in the living room, users have been defining these platforms while marketers and media companies scramble to catch up. Our panel of some of the leading thinkers in media and marketing will follow a new generation of screen-agnostic consumer who is moving across media, using smartphones at home as much as they do “on the go”, turning the tablet into a virtual cash register and moving much of their social networking off of the Web. The consumer is “the next big thing” but where do they go next?

Front Lawn - NASA’s successor to Hubble, the James Webb Space Telescope, will be 100 times more powerful. The Webb Telescope will orbit far beyond Earth’s Moon where the cold vastness of space will allow it to study the universe’s first galaxies as well as celestial objects hidden by clouds of cosmic dust. Stop by the lawn outside the Long Center (701 W. Riverside Drive) March 8-10 to see Northrop Grumman’s tennis-court-sized, four-story-high, full-scale model of the Webb Telescope. Learn about the vision behind Webb and the challenges of its construction in this immersive experience that showcases the science, images and technologies changing our understanding of the universe.
Free to the public, this exhibit features Microsoft’s interactive World Wide Telescope and activities with NASA that demonstrate how Webb will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to push the boundaries of science and technology. Delve in for an in-depth look at the perplexing questions that this incredible telescope is designed to answer, such as: How did the universe form? Is our solar system unique? Are we alone in the cosmos?

OMMA: What Marketers Should Ask Themselves About Social
Brand marketers are currently in the midst of dealing with the implications of the most revolutionary shift in the history of communication. Social media has upended the entire landscape, shifting the balance of power from stakeholders in mass communications (brand marketers, advertisers) to a mass of communicators (anyone with a social media footprint). This shift has led to a number of hugely important questions. How will brand marketers measure and justify these new currencies of engagement? Are a tweet and a “Like” valued the same? Should they be? What will it take to engage consumers at scale in the age of social? How will social compare to the banner ad, which our keynote speaker, Jeff Dachis, helped pioneer twenty years ago? In this session at OMMA Social at SXSW, Dachis will tackle these topics and also address the role social will play in driving pre-purchase intent in the years to come.

#catvidfest: Is This the End of Art?
On August 30th, 2012 over 10,000 people gathered at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for the first Internet Cat Video Festival (#catvidfest). What began as a social experiment testing the boundaries of online communities and crowd-sourcing content resulted in attention from local, national, and international audiences and press and raised public debate around the role of museums in an internet culture. Fractious questions were raised about the relevancy or ridiculousness of the event and the role of the curator in a crowd-sourced environment. Using #catvidfest as a case study, we will question what it means for a museum to reflect contemporary culture in the era of YouTube, explore the challenges traditional institutions face engaging online audiences and share what we learned from transforming a solitary online viewing experience into a real world social event. This session will include cat videos.

#ageofdamage: Be the Company You Want to Keep
David Jones is CEO of Havas, co-founder of One Young World—a non-profit organization described by CNN as the "young Davos"—and author of Who Cares Wins: Why Good Business is Better Business. Over the past decade he’s been a powerful advocate of using the power of creativity to effect positive change, including leading Kofi Annan’s tcktcktck campaign for climate justice. David argues that far from being separate subjects, social responsibility and social media are intrinsically interlinked: Social media has created a world of radical transparency forcing businesses, politicians and leaders to be more socially responsible, rewarding those who are and removing those who aren't. Through case studies and his views on the keys to success in the “Age of Damage”, David will demonstrate why the new price of doing well is doing good.

Architecture of the Air
Trained as an architect and a jazz musician, Christopher Janney has been combining these two disciplines for over 30 years. Sometimes trying to make architecture more like music- more spontaneous, more "alive"- Janney has created a series of permanent interactive light/sound installations in both the US and Europe, titled "Urban Musical Instruments." At other times, trying to make music more like architecture- more physical, more visual- Janney has created a number of performances and performance instruments including "HeartBeat" for Mikhail Baryshnikov where he danced to the sound of his heart in "real time".

Building the Touchy-Feely World of Tearaway
Game worlds with touch interfaces are everywhere, but is it possible to build a world you can FEEL with your fingertips?
We've built a touchy-feely world out of paper. A digital papercraft adventure that you can hold in your hands, and interact with, in a uniquely tactile way on Playstation Vita.
Learn about the challenges we had in designing and building a world that can flex, fold, tear and crumple under the fingertips of players. And the digital tools we designed to allow the game world to be built so realistically that it can be spooled out of any printer and remade in real paper as players progress on that journey.
Tearaway is the next game from Media Molecule, creators of LittleBigPlanet, and aims to bring a new form of creative gameplay to players, both with a new tangible craft aesthetic and by actively encouraging a creativity-loop outside of the game world.

Connected for Reconstruction
Disasters do not discriminate. In 2010 a massive earthquake ravaged the urban fabric of Port au Prince; in 2011 rural fishing villages were flattened by a tsunami in Northern Japan and in 2012 one of the greatest cities in the world was brought to its' knees by superstorm Sandy.

Designing Habits: From Big Data to Small Changes
We all know there are vast amounts of data about our lives - our spending, our browsing, our activity - being collected daily. With the recent explosion in inexpensive sensors and self-tracking apps, we can capture new insights in personal health and activity data. However, the data is only truly valuable if it can be turned into positive behavior change. A panel of leaders in venture capital, health technology and the research world, discuss the key enablers to tackling this challenge: the use of visualization to make volumes of data easily understandable to the average consumer, leveraging gamification and social mechanics to keep users engaged, and the science of habit design to actually create behavior change. The panel will be moderated by Michael Copeland, Senior Editor at Wired, who has a particular interest in Big Data and the implications for entrepreneurs and consumers.

Enterprise Invades the Apps Playground
Long a stronghold for consumer-friendly photo apps, games, and renegade business apps, the app stores of today are in for a major renovation as enterprise-class comes into its own. Think of the opportunity – according to Gartner, enterprise apps will generate nearly $40 billion in sales for developers by 2016.
It’s clear that enterprise mobility is rapidly gaining ground. But it's still a really challenging experience for most developers due to the technical complexity and expensive delivery models for most enterprise mobile platforms. Add to that the rapidly evolving nature of mobile technologies and you can see why most approach with trepidation.
But this is changing - beautiful, scalable, and affordable opportunities to build, test, and monetize are coming to the enterprise space. Will developers follow suit? And, if they do, are companies really ready for it?

Equity: Making the Most of Your Other Paycheck
If you're planning on joining a startup, start smart.
Venture financing in tech is at a fever pitch -- 3,700 companies received financing in 2011 alone, and all of them were issuers of stock options. This begs the question, what are stock options really worth?
Surprisingly, many startup employees do not understand the value of their options, which represent a significant part of their compensation and a vital part of their net worth. Time to smarten up! In the stock options game, it’s heads you win, tails you don't necessarily lose; either way, every employee should know the facts to make informed decisions. Understanding the basic economics of stock options can save you thousands, or even millions, in the long run. How’s that for incentive?
In this session, Bill Harris, CEO of online wealth manager Personal Capital (former CEO of PayPal and Intuit) will discuss the value of stock options to startup employees and offer tips to maximize their upside potential on your wallet.

Experience vs Ownership: The Rise of the Experience Economy
In the "old days", most people lived a more predictable, structured life. Most consumers aspired to own a home, and a car or two. There were certain days for work and days for play, clothes for work and other clothes for play, and so on. Companies also aspired to own their spaces and their infrastructure.
Today, people are rapidly evolving how they live and work. What seems increasingly important to people is quality of experience, selection and convenience - and that means having access to things when and where you want them, often without the overhead of ownership.
Jenn Hyman, co-founder of Rent the Runway and Aileen Lee, Founder of Cowboy Ventures and partner with KPCB talk about how new technology companies are facilitating an important cultural shift from an ownership economy to an experience economy - and what it all means.

Extreme GPS: Limits of Security & Precision
GPS has its limits. My students and I at the University of Texas Radionavigation Lab work to find them. For 20 years, GPS was so reliable it became navigation and timing crack for engineers. We all got addicted. We put it in our phones, planes, power grid, comms networks. But there are limits.
My students and I bought an $80k helicopter drone a few months back and pushed its embedded GPS receiver to the extreme. Turns out, you can hijack one of these drones by perfectly aligning fake GPS signals with the real ones. And you can do it from miles away. We grabbed the world's attention at White Sands in June. Our demo has changed the national conversation about integrating civil drones into the national airspace.
We want to probe the extremes again, only this time in precision. Surveyors already have hyper-precise GPS; we want to show how this can be commoditized, put in your cell phone, overlaid on the world. We want hyper-precise augmented reality.

Raise your hand if you agree with any of these statements:
- Gamers are primarily by young or teen boys.
- Games are usually played alone in the home on game consoles.
You may be surprised at how many people would have their hand raised…especially brand marketers and agencies who make decisions about promoting /advertising on games as part of their digital marketing mix. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) Games Committee is here to dispel the myths about gamers based on current research that shows how games truly are played by anyone, anywhere, anytime.
We'll introduce you to different gamer segments. You’ll learn about the type of games they are most likely to play, when and where they play them, what devices they play them on, how they interact with each medium and how mobile and tablets are significantly impacting today's game playing. We’ll end with some thoughts on the future of gaming.

Helping Aunt Ginny: Alzheimer’s, Technology & Me
As our loved ones age, we find ourselves taking on caregiver responsibilities, sometimes way earlier than we expected. Last year I became the sole caregiver for my Aunt Ginny who has Alzheimer’s. Here’s what I learned: Caring for the elderly is hard. Prioritizing yourself while serving as the caregiver for someone else is even harder. Technology can help both of you.
It’s tempting to introduce technology to our elderly loved ones so they can better manage their lives. But that doesn’t work. We’re the ones who need to make technology work for us while we are helping them.
Google Docs, email and smartphones are great tools for keeping everyday details straight – especially if you do not live in the same home, town or even state of the person you are caring for.
This talk will explore some of the challenges of caring for the elderly, technological advances that help you with daily management and tips for taking control while allowing the loved one to still believe they are in control.

How to Find the Co-Founder of Your Dreams
So you want to start a company--but you know it will grow so much faster if you start it out with someone else. But whom? Your college friends seem to still be in the beer-guzzling phase, and networking events haven't really led you to that "match"--the one person who really "gets" you and the company you want to build.
Where do you find your co-founder? And how do you keep that co-founder relationship from blowing up later on?
What we'll have a conversation about:
--Off-the-beaten-path ways to find a co-founder
--What tech co-founders are looking for in a business person
--What business co-founders are seeking in a tech person
--Specific strategies to help you find your "co-founder match"
--Pros and cons of co-founder relationships vs. going it alone
--How to organize your business so that you don't get screwed by your co-founder (or anyone who comes in later as an equity partner!)

I Know Where You're Going: Location as Biometric
Last year privacy advocate Malte Spitz sued his cell provider to get the location data generated by his phone. This data allowed him (and his provider) to track everywhere he went during a six-month period—during that time Deutsche Telekom recorded and saved his location coordinates over 35,000 times.
This session will discuss location data as the ultimate biometric identifier. The tracking devices we carry around in our pockets (our smart phones) send out location data every time they search for a signal. Law enforcement routinely requests this data - sending out over 1.3 million demands to providers last year. This data can not only reveal where we go and what we do in our lives—it can also define and identify us.
Jennifer Lynch, a privacy attorney at EFF, and Jeff Jonas, an IBM Fellow and Chief Scientist, will talk about the legal and technical aspects of location information as biometric, what this means for privacy and civil liberties, and what you can do about it.

Survival Strategies for Brands in China
Whether companies like it or not, China is the new battleground for brands that want to succeed on the global stage. Foreign brands are increasingly challenged to expand their presence in the East and create competitive advantages to help them establish strong footholds in China. At the same time, more and more Chinese brands are looking to expand beyond China and capture market share in regions around the world, including Africa, Europe and of course, North America. Those that fail in their overseas ventures will increasingly become vulnerable in their home markets, regardless of their countries of origin. The Economy of the GIF
From the oogachaka baby to Nyan Cat, the graphics interchange format, better known as the GIF, has come a long way since the days of floppy discs. The modern-day GIF was introduced to the world 25 years ago by Steve Wilhite at CompuServe as a more versatile alternative to the JPEG. Despite its adaptability and ease of use, the GIF became a pariah in the 1990s, due to its overuse on Web-hosting sites like GeoCities. Since then, everything has changed. Today the GIF is a format fit for museums and the lingua franca for people eager to express themselves with more than just an emoticon. GIFs have also gone mobile, thanks to programs like 3Frames, Cinemagram, and GIFShop. But more importantly, GIFs have opened up new avenues for artists and with it the potential to earn a living.

Recent news from the CERN laboratory in Geneva has revealed the existence of a heavy unstable particle that had been predicted by the theory that unifies two of the forces of nature. What Can We Learn from the Unabomber?
Ted Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber, continues to write anti-technology essays from prison, and his fans believe he makes some good points about the unforseen consequences of technology in modern society. One of those fans is philosopher David Skrbina, the Unabomber's longtime pen pal, who recently helped publish a book of the Kaczynski's writings. Mr. Skrbina says the violent tech skeptic should be taken seriously for his ideas. In this session, we'll explore whether that's true. Mr. Skrbina will outline the Unabomber's latest thinking, and another philosopher of technology, Peter Ludlow, will offer a counterpoint, in a debate moderated by a journalist who recently wrote a popular article on the topic.

How to Be Interesting
Combining fresh and pithy life lessons, often just a sentence or two, with deceptively simple diagrams and graphs, HOW TO BE INTERESTING is an inspiring guide that shows you how to lead a richer life.
Passionate, positive, down-to-earth and irrepressibly upbeat, each of its more than 100 spreads will nudge you a little bit further out of your comfort zone to a place where suddenly everything is possible.
It’s about taking chances—but also about taking daily vacations. About being childlike, not childish. It’s about ideas, creativity, risk. It’s about trusting your talents and doing only what you want—but having the courage to get lost and see where the path leads. Because it’s what you don’t know that’s interesting.
Jessica Hagy will talk about the kinds of people who she finds to be most interesting, and types of behaviors and traits that make them so—and present slides with cartoons featured in and inspired by the book. Q&A to follow, Reddit AMA style.

#pathonly: Social's Shift Towards Real Privacy
Dave Morin and Path have always maintained that privacy controls should be simple and that your data always belongs to you. Discover why building privacy and control directly into a product from the start is essential; explore alternative ways to share your information with friends and family in a private and contextual manner; learn about the importance of maintaining closer, private connections. Our social interactions should feel human again. Dave will discuss why social technology should be an extension of our real-life interactions and how networks can and should design for ease-of-use while empowering the user to be in control of their data.
This shift - back to human interactions and control over privacy - is quickly approaching. Are mobile and social companies ready for the switch?

Awe-Inspiring Web Typography You Can Do Now
Typography on the web is going from strength to strength. All web browsers proudly boast their typographic capabilities as CSS 3 continues to evolve & stabilise. We’ve seen the arrival of some fantastic fonts specifically optimised for the screen, not to mention some highly advanced displays.
This talk will use real world examples and a little code to get your typographic skills right up to the cutting edge of what is practical and desirable on the web right now.

Data & Gamification: Value to the Enterprise
Is Gamification fulfilling its promise and where is it taking us now?
The buzz of gamification is still humming along, mainly because of its tantalizing promise: there are fairly obvious ways to make the most tedious of tasks, well, actually quite interesting and fun. As gamification becomes integrated throughout consumer and enterprise interfaces, is it truly generating new insights or simply making it simpler to get boring things done with ease?
The fact is that companies using gamification techniques are generating massive amounts of data, (or big data) at an explosive rate. Data scientists are able to discover correlations and insights in data that have never been mapped before, ultimately showing us a new picture of human interaction. What we do with these insights can change our views on enterprise and employee interaction, such as how to plot career paths or hire the right person to fit an organization.

Growing a Digital Business in Eastern Europe
Eastern Europe is the new digital Wild West - with amazing opportunities. Traditionally most entrepreneurs had to go to the US to make their digital dreams come true - with Phil Libin (Evernote) or Andrej Naborgoj (Talking Tom) among the more prominent examples. Now a new crop of native startups is "making it" internationally - while staying rooted.
In this session some of this new crop of international entrepreneurs and a VC share how they do it, talk about some of the challenges and give advice for startups and digital professionals how to be successful in Eastern Europe.

How Side Gigs & Hobbies Can Help Your Career
In the span of about 4 months, I had the opportunity to start my own local business, was offered a modeling contract, got my foot in the door on an excellent marketing team at a B2B software company, and was offered a head coach position for a club volleyball team. And, like the ambitious younger self that I was... I said yes to all of it while still a full-time student.
In this talk, I'd like to share the good, the bad, and the really surprising impacts that my inability to turn down an opportunity have had on my career, and how I think others could benefit professionally by taking on side projects.

Imitation as Innovation: Lessons from the Shanzhai
From watches, bags and shoes to touchscreen tablets, fast food and electric cars -- you can find thousands of knockoff brands in China. Large, highly coordinated networks of innovative companies take the products and services we love in the U.S., alter them relentlessly and make them … better. Then they speed them to one of the world’s largest consumer markets and sell them at devastatingly low margins.
The problem with U.S. innovation? Our broken business models. American companies were built to be predictable, not adaptable. Trends like mobile, social and the cloud are major disruptive forces and businesses are struggling to keep up. Instead of fearing the Shanzhai, we can look at their 4 core tenets to reorganize the way we do business:
-Build nothing from scratch
-Innovate process at small scales
-Share as much as you can
-Act responsibly in the network
By adopting the philosophy of the Shanzhai “copycat culture,” companies can innovate faster and remain competitive.

It's Reddit's Web. We Just Live In It
For many years, Reddit -- a site that allows people to post, vote on, and comment on links from around the Web -- was an also-ran news aggregator, a place stuck in Digg's shadow. But suddenly Reddit has become the most exciting and influential community online. The site, which now gets billions of page views every month, was the epicenter of the Web's protest against Congress's SOPA copyright legislation, a gushing source of Occupy Wall Street memes (pepper-spray cop started on Reddit), and home to some of the most helpful, and the most misguided, Internet vigilantes. Redditors helped a bus monitor who was abused by her terrible kids raise hundreds of thousands of dollars; they also mistakenly attacked a cancer fundraiser, they've frequently posted child porn, and they've been accused of sexism. How is Reddit's power altering Web culture -- and should we celebrate it, or fear it?

Latinos y Mobile: A Silver Bullet?
As the numbers of Latinos in the US continues to grow, we have heard that mobile will solve the digital divide in empowering the Latino population but what does that mean are we making the correct assumptions? Our panel brings in experts from all sides to explore the impact of the Hispanic voice on technology and, in turn, the impact of technology on the Hispanic voice. The panelists bring experience in politics, caused based organization, commercial campaigns and mobile in order to uncover trends in issue identification and activation around the Latino community as a whole and the subsets within that whole. Much like the consumer today can choose between various tablets and smartphones for functionality and personal identification the Latino Community is not one size fits all community. The Latino community in the U.S. today is one of the most dynamic and diverse of all communities from a socioeconomic, racial, political and country of origin perspective. We explore this diversity.

Please Leave a Message
Catching consumers when they have time for us is becoming more complex. Now have to chase them around on their laptops, tablets and increasingly, their smart phones. As the screens have evolved, so has the message itself. Consumers expect to interact with it in a way that's appropriate to whatever technology they're using at that moment. And quite often, the message is the technology they're using at that moment and how the messenger can make it better.
How do we stay true to a brand and relevant to the consumer whenever, wherever and however we communicate with him or her? How can we be what people want, not what they want to tune out?
You're invited to attend a panel comprised of global thought leaders in design, branding, digital and mobile marketing. You'll get an in-depth look at how new media is changing the job we do. You'll learn what remains relevant, the challenges we have to meet to keep up, and how some are succeeding at it.

Spreadable Media: Value, Meaning & Network Culture
How can we better understand how content circulates within contemporary networked culture? The collective decisions people make about whether to pass along content are profoundly reshaping the media landscape. Many content creators struggle with the growing prominence of grassroots audience practices, while an array of online communication tools have arisen to facilitate informal, instantaneous sharing. This environment offers new opportunities for people to pass along content and new models to generate revenue from user activities. While the means for people to circulate material have proliferated, recommending and sharing are impulses that have long driven how people interact around media texts. In this session, the authors of the new book Spreadable Media discuss core concepts from their work, focusing on the social logics and cultural practices that have enabled and popularized these new platforms, explaining why (not just how) sharing has become common practice.

Technology, Imagination & Exponential Thinking
Today we live in a world where the exponential progression of technology is increasingly shrinking the lag time between what we can imagine and what we can create. We are rapidly converging to become a civilization of networked minds who will transcend all previous limits. As Erik Davis wrote in Techgnosis, "When everything becomes linked with everything else, matter becomes mind"
With the coming overlapping revolutions in biotechnology, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, the instruments to remake the world will be in everybody's hands.
The challenge is to get people to think EXPONENTIALLY (rather than linearly) when leveraging future possibilities and addressing grand challenges.
Another challenge is simply engaging wider audiences to think about these types of ideas.
In a media marketplace where "attention" is the new limited resource, capturing and managing people's interest in exponential thinking is precisely what my talk will address.

I'll bet you're sitting in a chair while reading this. And related health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disorders (back, knee, and hip pain) are also on the rise. This is an area of concern for all who sit in chairs a lot, especially those in the computer and media industries. Medical research has only seriously focused on this area for the past 15 years but already some commonly-held perceptions about fitness and wellness are changing. In this session, we'll discuss some of the recent research and tools available. Bring your ideas, experiences, and concerns.

The Consumerization of Revolutions
You’re powering a revolution, but you don’t even know it.
Because while you’re heads-down in Angry Birds (Mighty Eagle FTW), entire industries are falling down under the weight of your casual needs. Indeed, the world has chosen to rebuild itself to meet those desires.
How is this happening? From electricity grids to higher education to media to payment processing networks...old-school centralized infrastructures are quickly being replaced by decentralized ones, resulting in more frequent drastic shifts in how things work. Indeed, a trend is forcing centralized infrastructures to be displaced by decentralized ones that are naturally more flexible, more reactive to your desires, and which allow for rapid-fire revolutions.
In this session, join LevelUp Chief Ninja Seth Priebatsch as he presents on the consumerization of revolutions. Explore the seismic feedback effects that began with the tap of an iPhone and the infrastructures that are being retired -- and rebuilt -- as a result.

The New Nature vs. Nurture: Big Data & Identity
A baby born in the US today will live an algorithmed life. Her education, healthcare, career, who she dates, the ads she sees, what she reads, eats, buys, will be shaped by a feedback loop of data collected, processed, fed back to her, collected, processed, fed back to her.
We call this the new nature and the new nurture.
In the new nature, we know more about ourselves through data sources that we will have at our disposal. Information streams of personal and genetic data are increasingly available, but this raises psychological and emotional implications on self-awareness.
In the new nurture, retailers, corporations and government bodies use data mining to parse, segment, and sell to human beings. This marks a new moment for humanity: the algorithmed life.
The new nature and nurture create opportunity and peril. The increasing availability of data changes how we are able to know and define ourselves—at the risk of being defined by algorithms that we can’t control.

Voto Latino and National Voter Registration Day
In 2008, at least 6 million Americans didn't vote because they missed or didn't know their voter registration deadline.
In 2012, the first-ever National Voter Registration Day set out to fix that, and in the process wound up making a national holiday. On September 25, 2012, more than 1200 partners organized almost 1000 events across the country to register voters. Voto Latino, along with a handful of other groups, helped shepherd NVRD from concept to completion.
Online, NVRD set out to take over the Internet, leveraging celebrities, media, and most importantly grassroots supporters to do what had never been done before -- help people beat their deadlines and make sure they were registered to vote.
We were successful, but there's more to be done. Join us as we dissect the first-ever NVRD, and talk about what we think it will take to make this the first of many voter registration holidays to come.

Why the Neanderthals Were Lousy Entrepreneurs
The human brain is a funny thing: frankly, in terms of how it operates it hasn’t changed much since our Cro-Magnon days. We’re social animals designed to live 10,000 years ago in small tribes, totally dependent on the relationships around us. With biological programming that equates social approval with survival, it’s obvious why so many companies fall into collective groupthink, struggling to surface new and innovative ideas. Simply put: no one wants to look stupid. But there are (unexpected) ways to trick your brain into chilling out enough to coax innovative thinking out from the shadows. With Janet Crawford, an expert in neuroscience, on hand to provide the biological perspective, Ask.com’s CTO Lisa Kavanaugh can explain how applying improv exercises and techniques to the product development cycle helped her team relax, have fun and unlock their best ideas yet.

A Smarter Startup
Today's Internet startup founder is yesterday's rockstar, and with so much media coverage and movies being made about overnight tech billionaires, it should come as no surprise. But while legions of aspiring entrepreneurs quit their jobs or drop out of school to pursue the dream, few are aware that only one in twelve of them will succeed. With so much aspiration and so little forthcoming success, the obvious question is, why?
This book attempts to answer this question. We walk the reader through from the first decision to become an entrepreneur, to launching and tackle the strategic challenges along the way. The book was developed by compiling lessons learned from a decade of startup experience, analysis of industry best-practices, and established academic models. The result is a strategic guide that exposes the many pitfalls of online entrepreneurship, and provides advice for how to avoid them.

Seryn

Seryn is a 6-piece band who calls Denton, Texas their home. When listening to the well layered textures of guitars, ukulele, harmonium, bass, violin, banjo and various percussion, it’s hard to imagine This Is Where We Are is the band’s debut effort. The band’s strength resides in their vast musical talent and understanding of dynamics. Their beauty is gracefully displayed through chilling harmonies. Each member and their voice carry the... Fuck for Forest
Berlin’s "Fuck For Forest" is one of the world’s most bizarre charities. Based on the idea that sex can save the world, the NGO raises money for their environmental cause by selling home-made erotic films on the internet. Meet Danny, a troubled soul, as he accidentally discovers this exuberant, neo-hippy world where sexual liberation merges with global altruism, and joins their already colourful operation. From the streets of Berlin to the depths of the Amazon, together they are on a planet-saving mission to buy a piece of forest and save the indigenous peoples from the sick, sick West.View official listing on sxsw.com

NY Night Train Soul Clap & Dance Off (Brooklyn Brewery)

DJ Mr. Jonathan Toubin's Soul Clap and Dance-Off is North America's most popular soul party - by far playing to more people in more places and generating more capital than any of its contemporaries. Founded in New York City the concept is simple-all night dancing to the wild soul 45s of subterranean superstar DJ Mr. Jonathan Toubin and, in the middle, a $100 dance contest judged by a community panel. Cash is great. But so is a trip to Brooklyn for the dance-off championship at Brooklyn Bowl. Get your moves down cause the fine folks from Tumblr and Imgur will be judging the hell out of you from their perch on the dance contest panel.

Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction
Lensed in colour and b/w by Seamus McGarvey, the film explores Harry Dean Stanton’s enigmatic outlook on his life and his unexploited talents as a musician. “Putting the focus on the music rather than his person helped to engage him and capture a part of him that few people have seen. We wanted to create an atmosphere that is true to Harry, moving along with him, in his mind, at his pace, rather than to follow a linear or biographical order” (Sophie Huber, director). With excerpts from Alien, Paris Texas, The Straight Story, Missouri Breaks et al., and interviews with David Lynch, Wim Wenders, Sam Shepard, Kris Kristofferson and Debbie Harry.View official listing on sxsw.com

The parallel stories of two gay men in a small Texas town. There’s Gabe: a contractor who’s getting over an ill-fated affair with a married man and finds solace in the relationship he still harbors with his ex-wife, Shannon, and their daughter, Cindy; and there’s Ernesto: a Hispanic lumber yard worker in the midst of splitting up with his live-in boyfriend, Luis, as he receives news from the hospital that his former love, Martin, is in a coma. At the end, when Gabe and Ernesto meet each other for a one-nighter–having endured all the struggles and heartbreaks and wondering if they’ll ever find love again–they face the possibility that they might just be meant for each other.View official listing on sxsw.com

Sound City
"Sound City" focuses both on the history of the legendary Van Nuys, CA studio for which it is named--where such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Fear, Johnny Cash, Rick Springfield, DIO, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Queens of the Stone Age, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer and countless others have created classic after classic over the past 40 years--and on the ongoing fight to preserve the human element of music in an increasingly digital world. With its custom Neve console and uncanny acoustics, Sound City was an unlikely musical mecca. Through interviews with legendary musicians and producers, "Sound City" uncovers the magic within those walls and culminates with many of those legends creating a new album on that same console.View official listing on sxsw.com

Akron/Family

It was a century ago when I first saw Akron/Family perform, in the tiny back room of a bar in Brooklyn that held perhaps 20 people. Akron sat in chairs on a small stage festooned with red velvet and small theater light bulbs, their plentiful gadgets and musical toys littering more than a few tables – always seemingly on the verge of collapse. The young men awkwardly held their guitars in their laps or gently played drums/percussion... Read More →
