Music as Financing for independent Film
This is a Convergence panel presented by SXSW Film. This session is open to all badges: Interactive, Film, Music, Gold and Platinum.
This panel will discuss the evolution of music into a source of finance for independent film. Filmmakers rarely raise money from one source; debt, equity, grants, tax credits, rebates, and fan funding are well known sources, but music-based sources of finance can be increasingly useful to independent producers seeking to close their financing.

SXSW Film and Music are excited to present Nick Cave in Conversation with New York based author Larry Ratso Sloman.
Nick Cave is an internationally acclaimed author, composer, screenwriter and actor. In recent years, Cave wrote the screenplays for The Proposition and Lawless, while he and Warren Ellis scored The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and The Road. The two more recently presented the Lawless soundtrack featuring Cave/Ellis originals and classic compositions performed by The Bootleggers and the likes of Ralph Stanley, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris and more.
Sloman's numerous collaborators include Howard Stern, David Blaine, magic historian William Kalush and Anthony Kiedis of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, with whom he worked on the memoir Scar Tissue. Sloman also wrote an account of Bob Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour, On the Road with Bob Dylan, and penned Reefer Madness, a history of marijuana use in the United States.

Visual Voice: Branding on Photo Networks
With the rapid rise of photo-hungry social networks Pinterest and Instagram (and their subsequent effect on the more-established Facebook and Twitter,) branded content is compelled to become less verbal and more visual. For years, lifestyle brands have made significant investments in developing social voices. Our panelists include brands that have done this successfully- Natanya Anderson of Whole Foods Market, Jean Scheidnes of Neiman Marcus, Suzanne Schloot of kate spade and Pinterest/Instagram power user Bonnie Tsang. As language takes a backseat to image, brands must extend that effort to their "visual voice."

A Conversation with Rob Zombie
An auteur filmmaker with unlimited vision, Rob Zombie’s unique voice has gained him unparalleled recognition across the mediums of film, music and publishing.  Zombie’s most recent cinematic feat, The Lords of Salem, is produced in association with Jason Blum, Steven Schneider, Oren Peli (Insidious, Paranormal Activity franchise), and Andy Gould.  It premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and will be released through Anchor Bay in April 3012.  He’s had evident box office success with his re-imagining of John Carpenter’s Halloween in 2007, which premiered at #1 at the box office, breaking all Labor Day Weekend records and grossing over $80 million dollars worldwide.  Having breathed new life into the Halloween franchise, he also helmed Halloween 2 (Dimension), in August 2009.  Prior to that, Zombie wrote and directed the 2004 cult favorite House of 1000 Corpses (Lionsgate) and its companion, 2005’s critically acclaimed The Devil’s Rejects (Lionsgate). Zombie also added a twisted, R-rated animated feature to his roster, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (Starz), based on his own comic book series.

For the past two decades Zombie has also directed dozens of music videos, and was the first self-directed artist to win an MTV VMA.  He’s also directed a special episode of the CBS’s wildly popular CSI: Miami, Tom Pappa’s Comedy Central special, and uncharacteristically macabre commercials for Woolite laundry detergent and AMDRO ant bait.  As a musician, Rob Zombie is a 7 time Grammy-nominated recording artist, who has sold over fifteen million albums worldwide to date, and his latest album Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor will be released in April 2013.  Zombie still dominates the touring world, selling-out arenas around the globe, and toured the US on co-headline tours with the likes of Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, and Slayer.  When it comes to any artistic feat or endeavor, leave it to Rob Zombie to challenge and stretch the bounds of imagination, and the comfort zones of his audience.

What’s In A Name? Anonymity, Then and Now
“Anonymity” is a much-ballyhooed buzzword. But the complex issues of anonymity and authorship are far from unique to the Internet age. We’ve been here before.
Turn back to 17th century Europe, when publishing was a less-than-classy enterprise. How uncouth! Still, anonymous works were circulated and reviewed. There was authority without authorship, engagement without ego. But after the French Revolution, an “Age of Personality” was born. We’ve still basking in it.
Of course, it's more complicated these days. Anyone can slap a name on a blog post. But one can also eschew authorship. Pseudonymous posting is de rigueur because technological platforms make it easy, and the Supreme Court has continuously protected anonymous speech. But for how long?
Nabiha Syed, a First Amendment lawyer, and Katie Engelhart, a historian and author, will explore historical norms alongside today’s pitched battle over real-name policies. What space do we have today for the ever-prolific Anon?

C3S: Putting the Revenue in Creative Commons
Creators from Europe do not always have the option to use Creative Commons. Only a few collecting societies do offer that. Actually, CC users are kept out of the market, simply because individual contracts don't allow for airplay. This fact, and a vacuum of knowledge about CC leads to a situation where artists using CC can hardly make a living from it. Advocates want to change this situation. It's urgently required for artists to have a true artist-friendly collecting society. One that is transparent, flexible, and shaped by the artists themselves. One that embraces today's technology for the benefit of 1-on-1 billing - no statistically based distribution key required anymore.

The Power of Lyrics in the Digital Age
Twenty-five years ago, music fans read song lyrics on the back of an album cover, or in the liner notes, while they listened to a new album The tiny size of CD booklets discouraged reading along. In today's digital environment, a plethora of services and apps are distributing lyrics online and via mobile apps. This brings up a host of new issues; how they are used, what these new lyrics services/apps mean to artists and songwriters, how they can be made more compelling, how lyrics connect with social media, and what the licensing/copyright issues are.

Music Metadata Means More Money for Musicians
Music recognition technology has been with us for around for a decade. We can use a cell phone to identify a track in a few seconds. We know that digital fingerprinting technology is powerful and has many potential uses. We also know that broadcasters and media organizations have an obligation to report their music use to performing rights organizations and rights owners so that royalties can be paid. If the technology is so efficient and effective, why is it not being employed more widely?

Citizen Archivists and Cultural Memory
No area of cultural activity is more in need of citizen archivists than music, where entire scenes come and go in the blink of an eye, exiting before documentation of their existence can be thoroughly captured. Artists and labels can be the caretakers of their own cultural record, as long as they have the awareness and tools to make it happen. Citizen archivists talk about their labels and collections; discuss ways to sustain musical collections over time for history, profit or just for the thrill of it; and inspire others with compelling stories that demonstrate the value of preserving musical memories.

Inside the Music Supervisors' Brain: Case Studies
Take a unique look into the process of how music supervisors make decisions related to music placements in film and television. Three music supervisors will be paired with an artist, and together they present a short piece that they have worked on beforehand, synched to picture. Each supervisor/artist pair will discuss the process of how the music came about: what musical direction was given to the artist, how the process worked back and forth, why certain musical decisions were made, and how effective the final musical piece is in enhancing the picture. We will also look at previous projects from the supervisors, and let them explain how they came to different musical choices in their work.

SXSW Keynote: Dave Grohl
Dave Grohl's ascension to legendary status as one of the most beloved and respected figures on the international music scene goes back to his joining the DC-based punk rock band Scream at the age of 17. Three years and much international touring later, Grohl became drummer for Nirvana, making his recorded debut with them on 1991's generation-defining Nevermind. Following a guest drumming opportunity with Tom Petty, Grohl took center stage, forming Foo Fighters, on whose 1995 self-titled debut he wrote, recorded and sang every note–save for one guitar track. Foo Fighters have since grown into arguably the last great American arena/stadium rock band. Grohl recently completed work on Sound City, his forthcoming debut as a feature documentary director/producer. The film focuses both on the history of the legendary Van Nuys, CA studio and on the ongoing fight to preserve the human element of music in an increasingly digital world.

When one takes a close look at the fields of economics and consumer psychology, it becomes clear that nerdy social scientists have plenty to say that is relevant to the music industry. It's entirely possible for musicians and music industry professionals to make the structure of the industry and the features of consumer psychology work for them rather than against them, but in order to do so they need to learn a little bit about how both economists and consumers think.

Whichever side of the argument you land on, it's agreed that maintaining a healthy business based on music ownership alongside a growing streaming business could be a great solution. But what can we do to create value in the ownership of music in a world where streaming access to music is ubiquitous? Is buying and owning music still a relevant concept? Songwriting for the Screen
From montages to key scenes, main titles to end titles, original songs are written for film and television regularly, both by skilled songwriters and popular artists. The ability to capture the essence of a film (or moment) without telling too much, however, is a delicate art, making writing to picture one of the trickiest tasks for any musician. How do musicians and music supervisors approach this process today, and what do you need to know to create a track that’s just right?

SXSW Conversation: Bootsy Collins & Chuck D
Bootsy Collins and Chuck D embody the power of African-American music to move audiences and change culture. Bootsy and his teenage band The Pacemakers were hired by James Brown in 1970 where they both enlivened Brown's sound and earned their touring stripes. He was a core member of George Clinton's P-Funk ensemble. His distinctive "Space Bass" style is a bedrock of funk sound. Chuck D leads rap legends Public Enemy, who brought social consciousness and sonic intensity to rap music. Among their classic records is the standout "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back." PE continues to draw huge crowds worldwide and released two albums last year, including "The Evil Empire Of Everything." Chuck also runs the global hip hop community Rapstation.com. This joint appearance will bring two masters together for stories and inspiration.

Who Cares If You Have an Audience?
In 1967, Milton Babbitt wrote a famous article "Who Cares if You Listen?" arguing that modern music had reached such a high level that laypeople were no longer qualified to appreciate it. The ensuing controversy raised basic questions about the artistic endeavor: WHY do we create, FOR whom, and with WHAT expectations? Today, popular artists face these exact same issues as their predecessors in the avant garde did a generation ago. As music becomes commoditized and acclaim comes in tiny Facebook "likes", it begs the question: what are we creating for?

Brands Are Music Fans Too
There was a time when artists working with brands was seen as a sell out. To be fair, many of the early sponsorship deals were badly planned and executed. Promoters too, have not always managed to marry live music with brands in a way that works for the artist and the audience. Over time, music and brands have learned to work more closely without compromising their integrity, and many partnerships now deliver outstanding value for the brand, the band and the fan.

Guiltless Pleasures: Imagining a Post-Snob World
Beatles vs. Stones. Pop vs. art. Indie or mainstream. Rockist or poptimist. For decades, music culture and criticism has been built on such binaries, with artists trapped in the middle. This panel would explore why, in the era of iPods and infinite access, we still have trouble embracing different kinds of music and musicians as equals, drawing on controversial examples like Lana Del Rey and Nicki Minaj and the arbitrary elitism of sites such as Pitchfork. We'll discuss how the concept of "authenticity" hurts adventurous artists, and how cultural capital and the fear of being uncool are holding us back from becoming truly open-minded listeners.

Jim Dickinson, recording artist, producer, raconteur, Memphian and Mississipian, conservator of Southern music and World Boogie, gets the retrospective treatment from those who knew and worked with him in his many guises. A South by Southwest regular from the very first year, Dickinson appeared as Elvis, performed with his sons, and generously pontificated about everything from the Dixie Flyers' residency in Miami as Jerry Wexler's house band, and his tours and recordings with Ry Cooder and Bob Dylan to his production of acts including Big Star, the Replacements, Mojo Nixon, and the True Believers.

Live Music Supervision Session: Anatomy of a Scene
Selecting the perfect song to soundtrack a moment in a film, TV show or ad goes much farther than simply making a mixtape of pitched potentials. The winning track is at the center of a complex Venn diagram reflecting the overlap of resources, creative concerns and budget. Watch a live music supervision session unfold as 4 film/TV music supervisors discuss their process for culling, pitching or creating songs for a single identical scene. Three participants (licensing rep, publisher & artist) will each present a video demo to a studio music exec - their top song pick edited to the same film clip. Hear real time commentary on the original songs written for this select scene, and the complex vetting process involved.
