Music as Financing for independent Film
This is a Convergence panel presented by SXSW Film. This session is open to all badges: Interactive, Film, Music, Gold and Platinum.
This panel will discuss the evolution of music into a source of finance for independent film. Filmmakers rarely raise money from one source; debt, equity, grants, tax credits, rebates, and fan funding are well known sources, but music-based sources of finance can be increasingly useful to independent producers seeking to close their financing.

C3S: Putting the Revenue in Creative Commons
Creators from Europe do not always have the option to use Creative Commons. Only a few collecting societies do offer that. Actually, CC users are kept out of the market, simply because individual contracts don't allow for airplay. This fact, and a vacuum of knowledge about CC leads to a situation where artists using CC can hardly make a living from it. Advocates want to change this situation. It's urgently required for artists to have a true artist-friendly collecting society. One that is transparent, flexible, and shaped by the artists themselves. One that embraces today's technology for the benefit of 1-on-1 billing - no statistically based distribution key required anymore.

The Power of Lyrics in the Digital Age
Twenty-five years ago, music fans read song lyrics on the back of an album cover, or in the liner notes, while they listened to a new album The tiny size of CD booklets discouraged reading along. In today's digital environment, a plethora of services and apps are distributing lyrics online and via mobile apps. This brings up a host of new issues; how they are used, what these new lyrics services/apps mean to artists and songwriters, how they can be made more compelling, how lyrics connect with social media, and what the licensing/copyright issues are.

Music Metadata Means More Money for Musicians
Music recognition technology has been with us for around for a decade. We can use a cell phone to identify a track in a few seconds. We know that digital fingerprinting technology is powerful and has many potential uses. We also know that broadcasters and media organizations have an obligation to report their music use to performing rights organizations and rights owners so that royalties can be paid. If the technology is so efficient and effective, why is it not being employed more widely?

Citizen Archivists and Cultural Memory
No area of cultural activity is more in need of citizen archivists than music, where entire scenes come and go in the blink of an eye, exiting before documentation of their existence can be thoroughly captured. Artists and labels can be the caretakers of their own cultural record, as long as they have the awareness and tools to make it happen. Citizen archivists talk about their labels and collections; discuss ways to sustain musical collections over time for history, profit or just for the thrill of it; and inspire others with compelling stories that demonstrate the value of preserving musical memories.

Inside the Music Supervisors' Brain: Case Studies
Take a unique look into the process of how music supervisors make decisions related to music placements in film and television. Three music supervisors will be paired with an artist, and together they present a short piece that they have worked on beforehand, synched to picture. Each supervisor/artist pair will discuss the process of how the music came about: what musical direction was given to the artist, how the process worked back and forth, why certain musical decisions were made, and how effective the final musical piece is in enhancing the picture. We will also look at previous projects from the supervisors, and let them explain how they came to different musical choices in their work.

Kickstarter seems like the EASY button for funding your project. It isn't. From montages to key scenes, main titles to end titles, original songs are written for film and television regularly, both by skilled songwriters and popular artists. Who Cares If You Have an Audience?
In 1967, Milton Babbitt wrote a famous article "Who Cares if You Listen?" arguing that modern music had reached such a high level that laypeople were no longer qualified to appreciate it. The ensuing controversy raised basic questions about the artistic endeavor: WHY do we create, FOR whom, and with WHAT expectations? Today, popular artists face these exact same issues as their predecessors in the avant garde did a generation ago. As music becomes commoditized and acclaim comes in tiny Facebook "likes", it begs the question: what are we creating for?

Brands Are Music Fans Too
There was a time when artists working with brands was seen as a sell out. To be fair, many of the early sponsorship deals were badly planned and executed. Promoters too, have not always managed to marry live music with brands in a way that works for the artist and the audience. Over time, music and brands have learned to work more closely without compromising their integrity, and many partnerships now deliver outstanding value for the brand, the band and the fan.

Guiltless Pleasures: Imagining a Post-Snob World
Beatles vs. Stones. Pop vs. art. Indie or mainstream. Rockist or poptimist. For decades, music culture and criticism has been built on such binaries, with artists trapped in the middle. This panel would explore why, in the era of iPods and infinite access, we still have trouble embracing different kinds of music and musicians as equals, drawing on controversial examples like Lana Del Rey and Nicki Minaj and the arbitrary elitism of sites such as Pitchfork. We'll discuss how the concept of "authenticity" hurts adventurous artists, and how cultural capital and the fear of being uncool are holding us back from becoming truly open-minded listeners.

Music Licensing for Startups
The uncertainty and costs of licensing / rights clearance at the intersection of music and tech significantly curtail innovation in the space. Creating a startup license regime where entrepreneurs have access to a pre-negotiated, low cost license to a large catalogue of music content would allow exploration of potentially lucrative new revenue streams for digital music consumption. What terms and pre-qualifications would rightsholders and tech innovators need for it to be valuable to both interests? How do we demystify the process of licensing these catalogues?

Casual Music Fans: Behind the Trend and Proud
Over the last few years we've talked incessantly about how musicians can build sustainable careers by catering to diehard superfans. While this may work for cult fans, is the over-emphasis on superfans causing musicians to miss out on a larger, albeit more passive, fan following? In tech spaces, we understand that different strategies are needed when talking to mainstream customers versus to early adopters/tech evangelists. The same idea applies to musician fanbases as well, but we know very little about what it means to be a "casual music fan." Hear original research that constructs a profile of the casual music fan and what this means for musicians and their teams.

Rogue Ticketing
Artist ticketing and scalping are hot button topics, but is artist ticketing truly possible? Many venues have exclusives with ticketing giants, so acts like Louis CK opting to do their own ticketing face major challenges. LCD Soundsystem expressed similar anger toward Ticketmaster after tickets to their final MSG concert sold out and were scalped instantly. Did they have another viable ticketing option? We'll explore both sides using scalable, traditional ticketing companies vs. going rogue.

Who's Ripping Me Off Now?
In June 2012, a blog post by musician David Lowery set off a firestorm. Written to an intern at NPR who admitted to not having paid for the 11,000 tracks in her collection, the post generated more than a million views in just one week and numerous media stories. In its wake, musicians, fans and the industry were all re-evaluating long held beliefs. Who is "the man" today? Can the Internet be both innovative and ethical? Who speaks for the artists? And what obligation does the fan have to his or her favorite artists (if any)?

Women in Metal: Why Is This Still An Issue in 2013?
The heavy metal boys' club has always made it a bit tougher for the so-called fairer sex to be accepted within the testosterone-fueled world of denim & leather, but women have been swinging guitars and screaming for vengeance since the genre's inception. Yet, more often than not, their involvement is painted in shades of sparkly, patronizing pink or stuffed into a corset and told to smile pretty. Why are "women in metal" features still acceptable, and more so, why are they seen as necessary?

Guess What? Your Press Release Sucks!
Press releases and bios are the foundation stones of any publicity campaign. These materials are often the first information writers, editors and other content producers encounter on an artist and their decision to want to learn more, hear music and so on usually hinges on the impact they make. Good press materials, properly distributed are almost a campaign in themselves and can be a great help for artists doing their own press for budgetary reasons. They are THE essential tool for publicity professionals.

Each year festivals around Europe erect city templates with population densities greater than Shanghai's. It is a unique interplay between music, art, architecture, games, and togetherness. The festivals are a metropolitan platform for knowledge sharing, exploring potential and creating innovation. Their playful process is a catalyst for real world applications, and though festivals might be temporary, their wake is persistent. So you’ve put aside a social media marketing budget. Great! Don't squander it all seeking YouTube plays. "Being everywhere" is not a strategy. Artist managers and labels spend a lot of time and money building a massive (and passive) base and then wonder why they can't sell tickets. Our panel will give practical takeaway advice on how to seek and connect with users who are more likely to support your shows, Kickstarter campaign, merchandise, single and album sales. We'll talk about the very best platforms to drive sales, social media best practices, key apps to use in the field, and more. The ultimate goal for any brand should be attracting, retaining and OWNING connections with quality fans. Being awesome is not enough, you have to have a digital strategy that supports converting fans to consumers.

Finding the Funk
Starting with Funk's roots in Jazz and the James Brown bands of the '60s, the documentary "Finding the Funk" takes a road trip to the Bay Area to celebrate Sly & the Family Stone, then it's off to Dayton, Ohio, the birthplace of so many of Funk's originators. Next stop on the journey is Detroit, where from the ashes of Motown, P-Funk's Mothership arose, and finally LA, where a new crop of musicians are creating their own Funk history. The filmmakers and legendary artists sit down to discuss the past, present and future of Funk music.
