On Creativity, Inspiration & Doing the Work
What do movies like 300 or Zombieland have to do with the writing life or the creative process? According to Erin Feldman of Write Right, everything. Sometimes, a writer has to kick the muse, the angel, inspiration - whatever - down a well. Other times, a writer has to take a well-aimed strike to herself or the writing itself. The creative life is not for the faint of heart. It’s for the tough ones. It’s for the ones who refuse to wait for the creative impulse or inspiration to strike. They are the ones who push against resistance. They train. They get to work. They practice, then they practice some more. They develop some rules. They welcome inspiration when it comes, but they learn to endure. They learn to work even on the days when inspiration and creativity are nowhere to be found. They have to work. They know it’s the only way to survive.

Unlikely Bedfellows... Yours Awaits
No, it’s not college. But these days, everyone from multinational corporations to renowned medical institutions is getting into bed with unexpected partners. The results are spectacular and surprising: an IT company is helping to kill a superbug, robot technology is enabling blind people to navigate, and a family laundry soap helped save the day after a fiery explosion at the Daytona 500.
In this solo presentation, Lincoln Bjorkman, NA Chief Creative Officer at Digitas, will share stories of unlikely, surprising and curious partnerships that have yielded astonishing results. He’ll explore how some big challenges are tackled by leading companies and innovative inventors who chose to see 360 degrees, then went one degree further. You’ll be inspired to explore how unlikely partners can bring a new lens to your own biggest challenges.

Get ready to find your unlikely bedfellow.

Story Is the World Force
Story is the hot new buzz but it's more than just a word, just a hip term. It's something at the core of our being. Authentic. It's people craving connection. Story. Not just technologically.. not just physically .. authentically. People crave honest, real, connection. Story is one of the ways we do that. There's a dialogue that is happening. It occurs in many forms: on the internet, face-to-face, on stage, at work, at home, at school. We're each looking for the honest, genuine connection.

Political Cartooning: From Dead Trees to Live Wire
Political cartooning has been around since ancient Rome and is more popular with readers than ever before. Now that print media is being replaced with online distribution channels, however, they're being left behind—and content-based websites are missing the chance to exploit this powerful mix of words and pictures. Cartoonist, author, ex-newspaper syndicate executive and occasional comix war correspondent Ted Rall explains how cartoons—not just political cartoons—can bring more eyeballs to your website and can be directly monetized.

The Power of Bad Ideas
In business and in life, we pursue the good stuff and champion people who are known for their good ideas. But when we place too strong an emphasis on just the good, we may neglect to consider the bad ones. In design and in brainstorming, deliberately seeking out bad ideas is a powerful way to unlock creativity. Generating bad ideas can reveal our assumptions about the difference between bad and good, and often seemingly bad ideas turn out to be good ones. Jotly and Cow Clicker were jokes/parodies (e.g., not good ideas) that have been surprisingly successful. Neil Young and Crazy Horse have covered folk songs. An action blockbuster features a US president swinging a silver axe against vampires. In this talk, I’ll explore how opening up the bad idea valve can lead unexpectedly to the kind of success we aim for with our good ideas.

Creativity Is Epidemic: Lessons from Viruses
Creativity is often seen as a light bulb, either on or off, I have it or I don't. When it's off and your job is to apply it, panic strikes and the focuses becomes less on the problem to solve and more on how to get creativity back online. Yet when it's flowing, not many people think of spreading it, or know how to. What if creativity mimicked the patterns of epidemics; is there anything we could learn from viruses to keep it shining bright?
This talk will look at the science gathered on viruses and pandemics to spot insights that will help creativity become the most useful virus ever to replicate and will share insights that will help turning it on when it's needed.

Is Your Digital Ready for the Minority Majority?
In May 2012 the US Census Bureau reported that for the first time in history minority newborn children outpaced whites, ushering in the new American reality known as "The Minority Majority". For many, the Bureau’s observation was little more than confirmation of a cultural shift building in the US for several decades. Without mistake, the infusion of minority cultures has made a vibrant and certain mark on TV, music, language, food and even names in this country. Yet the digital strategies of countless (otherwise) forward-thinking companies fail to account for this new reality, limiting their ability to genuinely connect with contemporary American consumers. How does your digital strategy compare? Through an inventive analysis of data we will construct the case for a break from traditional “general market” advertising, learn from some unfortunate missteps, and explore opportunities for improved marketing in today’s new America.

Call of Duty: How STEM Can Change the Battlefield
With the next generation of warfighters taking on the face of a video gamer in the States vs. a camouflaged soldier in the battlefield, STEM skills are increasingly important to today's military in order to continue protecting those that protect us. Activity-based intelligence, IT security infrastructure, drone navigation, "invisible" armor, aerial sensors – it's not "virtual reality"; it's the critical engineering needed in the defense world. But maintaining it is proving to be a challenge. It's not just that talent is going elsewhere; there's a considerable lack of female and minority representation in the field. Hear why defense company BAE Systems CIO Michael Bennett is touting STEM as the "great equalizer", and how his industry is using social media to attract employees to defense-related professions that would typically take their tech talent to traditionally-digital companies.

How to Become An Overnight Sensation: 1000 Online Comments
A few years ago, I become a mother and an orphan, almost overnight. Sitting in my house in the woods, grieving with young children, I knew my road to happiness lay in creating and building with technology. But the industry had shifted radically -- it felt like the train had left the station. Indeed, people told me "Nope. Not gonna happen.” I was 39, invisible, and irrelevant.
I decided I to make myself essential, by showing up. I decided to attend 100 events and write 1000 online comments.
By the time I was done, I was Founder/CEO of a funded startup, a recognized voice in the industry, and one of Forbes Ten Female Entrepreneurs To Watch. Today, I work with the world's leading corporations on the Future of Innovation.
U.S. corporations have eviscerated mid-level management -- a paradigm shift which leaves people age 40+ struggling to redefine themselves online. This inspirational talk shares proven steps to bring your authentic, essential wisdom into the new social world.

Branding on the Moon: Marketing in the Middle East
Landing in The Middle East is the natural progression for brands as they seek to take advantage of this increasingly consumerist society. But this melting pot of cultural contradiction – that just 30 years ago was little more than harsh desert – poses challenges the likes of which brands have never before encountered.
In an industry that is renowned for provocation in the most liberal of markets, how can advertising thrive in a conservative meritocracy whilst pushing the creative envelope? And how is the evolution of digital communications in The Middle East presenting opportunities to circumnavigate these constraints?
In this panel we look to address the challenges faced by brands and agencies in the region and explore the strategies to overcome them. We highlight where and why brands have failed and succeeded and consider what the future holds for the world’s harshest advertising environment. An eye-opener for anyone interested in the nuances of doing business in The Middle East.

Growing a Business in a Submerged Economy (Greece)
The Greek economy was one of the hottest global news topics of the past year. While international media sparked constant fears of the Euro fallout, local residents faced the instability of transitioning governments and unemployment surpassing 22% (50% for youths under 25!). Despite these staggering statistics, the recession was actually a source of opportunity for several young Greek entrepreneurs and companies, including ours - Daily Secret, the world’s smallest and fastest growing multinational digital media company. Started as a positive energy initiative to spread our love for Athens, Daily Secret has grown to over 550k members across 4 continents in over two years. We will discuss how the economic crisis inspired us to capitalize on the economic turmoil while simultaneously benefiting the Greek community. We’ll also talk about how the techniques and strategies we use are relevant to succeeding in other struggling economies around the world.

Citizen Voices & Screaming Bullets in Mexico
Citizen journalism through social media platforms helps deliver truth into mainstream reporting and ensure community safety in places with oppressive regimes. But what happens when, as in Mexico today, truth in reporting is stifled not by a nefarious despot, but rather by an intricate web of drug lords wielding machine guns and Molotov cocktails? Caught in between often-complicit authorities and violent drug cartels, Mexican citizen reporters’ most pressing struggle is that of survival.
After the murders of four citizen reporters in September 2011, the need for a secure and trustworthy platform for social media reporting of Mexico’s drug war became paramount. Enclave, an open-source platform, was designed to address this evolving need with sophisticated security measures, veracity rating tools, and nationwide connections. Enclave promises to be an invaluable tool for disseminating information and best practices in the fight against Mexican drug cartels.

Information Literacy in an Online World
Information Literacy is the ability identify an information need and to locate and evaluate appropriate resources to satisfy this need. As more and more information and communication has moved online information literacy has become closely tied to computer literacy. Individuals who find themselves on the bottom of the digital divide often lack skills necessary to compete and thrive in today's society. These individual may lack the ability to find work, stay informed of laws and rights, obtain social and financial services, and are at an increased risk for online scams and identity theft. The level and quality of general public discourse is also affected by information literacy rates. This presentation will take a look at how age and economics are tied to information literacy, provide insights gleaned through library reference work in public, academic, and legal libraries, and discuss on how design can promote information literacy and computer literacy.

How To Think Like a Scientist & Save the World
I’m an engineer. That doesn’t just describe my training or my job description, it’s who I am. I look at the world through a scientific, analytical lens, and when I identify problems, I prototype ways to solve them. Engineers have unique viewpoints and skills and, I argue, a unique responsibility to use our abilities for the good of all. Why can’t we, as engineers, team up to solve some of the world’s biggest problems? If you’ve read about (or lived) the Lean Startup or used Agile practices to build things incrementally and iteratively, you know how important it is to take action now, and not wait. As an engineer, you understand the value of gathering data, learning quickly, steering reactively and constantly improving whatever you’re working on. Based on Ryan’s real-world experiences, this session will focus on how to better understand, educate and enable the citizen engineer, giving them the practical advice and tools they need to take on this important responsibility.

Open-Source Empathy: Humans as Dynamic Systems
Human beings are advanced dynamic systems. Each of us interfaces with our emotions differently. Consequently, we interface with each other in desirable and undesirable ways through various access points. My process throughout the development of the case studies shared in this panel, the interaction of others with the projects, and the results of my facilitations reveal patterns in the resistance to interpersonal connection. By considering the parallels between the uncertainty of human connection and the way that dynamic media systems work, I’d like to share my findings on what it means to be human. Toby Bottorf of design and innovation firm, Continuum, proposes that, “one way to aim for more surprising work is to include more disciplines as influences and sources of inspiration.” This panel offers that by using the psychoanalytic technique to objectify one’s subjective experience, designers can better understand themselves, their users, their medium and the ways in which they connect.

At various points every element broke down: the venue backed out, we didn't raise enough money, no press wanted to cover us, Guinness didn't approve our claim, and we even lost half of the monkeys. I'll present my story as a case study in negotiation and community organizing. Take-away lessons include:
* In an email, "no" often means "let's talk about it on the phone or in person"
* Don't ask for permission, ask for help
* Fake it until you make it

Setting Up a Dev Shop: A Simple 8 Step Guide
Setting up the dev shop at a startup is really hard. As the technical leader of the shop, it feels overwhelming. As the non-technical leader, it's scary because you have no idea if things are being done "right".
I will show you that it doesn't have to be that way. I've setup the dev shop at several startups, and there is a simple, obvious and sane way to get the job done. It's 8 steps (with a 9th bonus step!) and when you see it you'll say, "gosh, that is so easy...I can't wait to take that back home!"
To be clear, this isn't fluffy pontification about "best practices": these are the actual steps I've followed in the past, and if I ever setup another dev shop, I'll use them again in the future.
Also, my slides will have lots of LOLcats because I work at Cheezburger, so there's that too!

Big Data: Is It Killing Creativity?
Storytelling. Creativity. Emotion. These elements have forever been the backbone of marketing.
But now, thanks to the digital revolution, the creative industry finds itself balancing two very different approaches. While new technology and mobile devices have brought exciting new ways for marketers to connect with their audiences, they’ve also brought something else: data. And it’s big data - full of all kinds of information about customers. Now marketers know more about their audiences – where they live, what they like, their social networks, where and how best to reach them – than ever before.
The rise of marketing analytics has resulted in information previously not available to an artistic industry rooted in creativity, not numbers. But how much customer data is too much? What if creatives overanalyze data and lose the art of compelling storytelling? Will dashboards push aside storyboards? Hear how data and creativity are both competing and coexisting in marketing today.

Internet of Things: Of Bears, Bats & Bees
The internet of things (IoT) started off as a crazy scifi dream but its basic building blocks: ultra cheap computing and swarm computation are slowly working their way into existing product categories. This tends to confuse people as classic devices such computers and phones are now considered by many to be part of the internet of things. This talk will provide a simple categorization of the IoT into bears (big computers) bats (focused smart devices) and bees (tagged objects that can be tracked) These three groups form the basic "tribes of IoT" and provide a framework to discuss what each functionally needs. This talk will also extend the framework of the internet to this hardware category, showing how the open standards that built the internet must continue into hardware. This is critical as we are looking at a future of proprietary lock-in where one company is trying to own the future. We are better than this and must fight for our future.

Internet of Things: The Possibilities of Data
Imagine a developing country where a bandage not only heals a patient’s wound, but also tracks data like bacteria levels and blood pressure with a built-in sensor that can be monitored real-time by a doctor. Visits to the Dr.’s office are reduced because the patient only needs to go if readings are abnormal, saving time and money. This isn’t the premise of a new Sci-fi flick. It’s one of the many possibilities coming from the Internet of Things (IoT).
The concept of IoT isn’t new, but discussion in the tech industry has often been limited to conversations on topics like smartphones controlling thermostats and tablets controlling fridges. It’s time to look at how we can use this technology to benefit humanity. How is data being tracked to create a better world? Where does the data go? In this panel you’ll hear about some real projects in development today and what to expect in the future. How Design Leads Set Up Projects for Success
Doing great design is not enough; we need to *lead* our design efforts. We need to negotiate tradeoffs with business partners, design in the context of other product development processes, and work with business partners who don’t speak the language of design. In order to do this, we have to set it up for success.
This session is about what it means to be a Design Lead at the start of a project, so you can improve the way you lead, gain greater influence, and be more effective. I’ll cover ways of being, internal consulting skills, creating relationships, and how to anticipate problems before they happen.
Drawing on years of experience with clients such as Wells Fargo, HP, Ancestry.com and others, I’ll share tools and materials that other Design Leads are using: Lead guides and manuals, checklists, one-sheeters, and more. You’ll see examples of beautifully designed UCD plans, visual timelines, diagrams of how workstreams work together, and other context-setting pieces.

Experience Design for Hostile Environments
As User Experience professionals continue to tackle the challenges of designing for mobile solutions, the environment of use becomes increasingly important.
What do you do when you encounter obstacles to designing an effective touchscreen user experience, such as gloved hands, filthy environments, rain or snow, turbulence, or bright sun?
Often design considerations must be revisited. For instance, limiting the design to simpler actions – single taps versus more complex gestural interactions like swiping, touch-and-hold or pinching to zoom.
Conducting research where the designer can see first hand the challenges that await designing for these situations become very important.
We will be looking at things to consider when designing touch applications intended for hostile environments that are far removed from the sterile, white, clean environments portrayed in advertisements for mobile devices from Apple and Android.

Interaction Literacy & Participatory Design
The term “literacy” usually refers to the ability to read and write functionally. The emphasis is on interaction with the written word - taken for granted as the cornerstone of education. But momentum may be building in the direction of a more visual and auditory literacy. With greater numbers gaining access to more diverse formats and sharing them across social networks, there’s an ever-increasing amount of “live” documentation of personal experiences. If this form of storytelling is experienced in a way fundamentally different from strictly textual reading, it may also require a different understanding of literacy.
In this session, Razorfish Healthware's Erin Abler explores the concept of "interaction literacy," a potential framework for clarifying the elements of multi-mediated, participatory forms of experience. Presenting a model for further development, she explores how insights into the elements of human experience can be used to create new design processes.

Design for Aging, Your Future-Self
The stereotypical product image for seniors entails bigger buttons, bigger text, and bigger screens. When it comes to designing for the elderly, it is not necessary to dumb down technologies. In this talk, we’ll take a different perspective on aging: Rather than focusing on their disabilities such as loss of vision/hearing/memory, we look into the rich dimensions of their lives, their surrounding communities, and discuss how design can contribute in this domain.
We move beyond usability, and introduce “Design for Aging” as a process of innovation. We will present our design research approach in detail, including our thoughts behind the emerging trends on aging. We will share our experience on how we discovered the aging populations' inspirations, aspirations, values and challenges to their daily lives.
This talk plans to introduce you to "Inclusive Design", inspire you to take on different lenses, and offer plenty of design opportunities in the domain of aging.

Your TV Knows Who You've Slept With
Well, not yet. While digital personalization has touched most of the marketing mix, the TV spot has continued to hold strong. Interactivity has flirted with those :30s and :60s, but limitations in hardware and software on the part of manufacturers, broadcasters and (most importantly) cable providers have kept even the most adventurous spots “shrink-wrapped” and siloed interactive executions to a DIRECTV submenu.
But what if you could sync your Facebook or G+ to your Comcast or Time Warner? What if your commercials could know your age, your location, you interests, your friends, your past purchases and more? What would those spots look like and how would they work? And most importantly, can templatized personalization successfully co-exist with the powerful emotion we’ve come to expect from our spots?
This session will explore these topics and more, sharing some of the most promising experiments that may lead to answers and the future of Interactive Marketing through your TV.

Blogging Is Dead: Long Live the Individual
The world of blogging as we once knew it is dead and gone. Independent websites run by single, mostly amateur individuals have given way to large internet media houses featuring re-blogged and syndicated content.
Where have the individual personalities gone? What happened to unfiltered content presented by non-professionals? This characteristic form of online information has largely transformed into short posts (tweets, comments, questions, answers, forum posts, wiki updates, etc) shared on large, external websites and social media platforms, which are now the most powerful (and in many cases, only viable) platforms for user-generated content.
Does this mean that high quality user-generated content tied to an influential online persona is a thing of the past? Hardly! Join user-generated content expert Simone Smith as she discusses how the individual is coming back to the world of UCG- and sharing work that is richer and more comprehensive than ever before.

Sign of the Times: The Evolution of Ambient
While some might consider billboards, bus kiosks and other “signage” to be outmoded or quaint media channels, the fact is outdoor advertising is being driven as hard as any other medium. And it’s never been more relevant. Or badass.
New changes in “OOH” regarding technology, proportions and interactivity pop up daily. Artificial intelligence, motion sensors, augmented reality and mobile are all a part of the mix.
Signs are cool. They represent social currency.
The creator of the iconic "Curiously Strong Mints" Altoids campaign will discuss the potency of outdoor media in the development and success of his famous campaign as well as where out-of-home is today. And where it’s going tomorrow.
Incorporated into this presentation is a provocative look at signage over history, it’s role in changing human behavior, as propaganda, as cultural touchstone... and why we can't stop looking at signs, or making them.

Fantasy vs. Reality: The 50 Shades Phenomenon
Whips, chains, & floggers, oh my! Fifty Shades might not make good literature, but it is one hell of a catalyst for conversation. The astounding popularity of the Fifty Shades trilogy has brought kink out into the sunlight, but now what? What happens when poorly researched fanfic is used as a mainstream cultural reference point? These books could fade as a fad or they could be leveraged as a new way of being open about sexual desires & normalizing kinky fantasies. Couples have been furtively bought feathered riding crops & fur-lined handcuffs for decades, only now it’s becoming socially acceptable to admit it. Learning the difference between fantasy, reality & abuse is a key element to healthy kinky expression but on this point Fifty Shades fails miserably. The books start as sexy inspiration but ends up promoting unrealistic expectations & false stereotypes. Yet when the books are used to arouse a social sexual awakening & get people talking, they hit the mark perfectly.

When Movies Met Innovation: An Untold Love Story
We’re more open than ever before to embracing the latest technologies and content consumption forms. At-home entertainment options can provide a more attractive and economical experience than leaving the couch.
The cinema industry is feeling the effects of these changing consumer habits more than anyone. Services like Netflix and devices like the iPad, with on demand movie access, have changed the way movies are consumed. Films are made to be seen on the theater big screen, yet movie theater attendance is on a steady decline as these other delivery models continue to increase.
While we’ve started to see the first steps being taken to make the moviegoing process more in-tune with today's consumer, a constant fuel of innovation is necessary to reignite the passion around cinema.
In this Future-15 presentation MoviePass co-founder and CEO Stacy Spikes will take a look at the past, present and future of movies, and discuss the need for meaningful innovation in the industry.

5 Questions About Persuasion Profiling
Wouldn't you want to know how to adjust your (online) presence in a way that you increase the chance of conversion for each user individually? Persuasion profiles are collections of estimates of the effect of persuasion principles for each individual user. After Eli Pariser wrote an essay in WIRED about the scientific work Maurits Kaptein & Dean Eckles did at Stanford, persuasion profiling has been on everybody lips. The Science Rockstars team (the company Maurits Kaptein started with Arjan Haring) will come to SxSW to share their experiences of the last year with implementing persuasion profiling for the first time "in the wild" in large scale ecommerce settings.

Wearables: Moving from Niche to Mainstream
Sensor-laden wearable devices, with their unique ability to capture data generated by the body, will fuel the next wave of growth and innovation in personal computing—part of a larger phenomenon we call Smart Body, Smart World. Today, wearables like the Nike+ FuelBand are proliferating in the health and fitness space, but they occupy a relatively niche market. The tipping point for wearables will come when they break out of health as a vertical into health as a horizontal, applying body-generated data to diverse scenarios like social networking, gaming, navigation, commerce, and productivity. Winning products will mash up data from disparate sources, deliver insights that support more informed decision-making, and enable new forms of extra-sensitive communication and self-expression.

Painting Posthumous Portraits w/ Digital Detritus
Kids today have data-points uploaded about them before they are born. Then they create, save and share even more data. They will be able to trace their entire life in data. The more data collected about them the more holistic the picture we can paint of them over the course of their life. Over the years, the digital artifacts they leave behind will help their loved ones remember and perhaps better understand them after they are gone.
This talk will explore the potential for long-term sentimental uses of big data each of us generate, both passively and actively. We will conceptualize about interfaces and devices that could display, make sense of and encourage reflection on individual lives using that data.
We'll explore how pools of seemingly bland big data can reveal behavior patterns in people's lives tied to their emotional and social experiences, especially when layered with actively generated digital artifacts.

Attention Couch Potatoes: Motion Makes It Easier
Today's media-savvy consumers routinely access media from many sources and are growing increasingly impatient with the constraints that plague device-oriented entertainment. The Internet has also changed consumer expectation and rendered the selection tools of traditional TV entertainment obsolete. Fortunately, advanced motion sensors are becoming prevalent in many CE products and are more central to the user experience therein. By using motion technology as a core utensil, it is possible to dramatically improve usability and therefore enable improved device navigation and interactivity in Smart TVs, smartphones and tablets, game consoles, set-top boxes, PCs, and more. This session explores flexible, practical and cost efficient motion solutions for the majority of CE use-cases, and demonstrates how motion will be a dominant utensil in the implementation of content discovery, device navigation and interactivity across a wide range of devices and platforms in the coming years.

The Next Disruption
James McQuivey, Ph.D., author of the new book Digital Disruption, promotes that accelerated disruption made possible by ubiquitous digital platforms and tools. In his work with companies in nearly every industry, he has observed the rise of a mindset among digital disruptors that is part hacker ethic, part rugged individualist, and part naive do-gooder. These traits are converging in maximally disruptive individuals that McQuivey collectively calls The Next Disruption. Where digital disruption research has historically focused on rewriting the rules of business creating now-legendary forces for change like Facebok and Hadoop, The Next Disruption will go much further, consciously applying the same interest in experimentation, data science, and risk to change the way we learn, govern, and live. This is not about the next big thing. It's about the next small things, billions of them, moving toward a bigger future than any powerful players can do alone.
